Primary food processing turns agricultural products, like raw wheat kernels into eatable forms. This class includes ingredients that are created by drying, threshing, winnowing, and edge grain, etc. Contamination and spoilage will cause health threats. However, several processes contribute to improved food safety and longer shelf life before the food spoils. Commercial food processing uses control systems such as hazard analysis and failure mode and effects to reduce the risk of harm.

Baking bread is an example of secondary food processing. Secondary food processing is an everyday method of making food from ingredients that are able to use. Baking bread, in a small bakery, or in a large factory, is an example of secondary food processing. Most of the secondary food processing methods known to humans are commonly described as cooking methods.

Tertiary food processing is referred to as processed foods. These are ready-to-eat or heat-and-serve foods, such as dinners and re-heated airline meals.
